House Explosion Rocks Fairplay Main Street - 4/10/2008
Fairplay CO: Shortly before midnight on April 9 North-West Fire was called to a fully involved structure fire on Main Street (HWY9) in Fairplay. Within minutes, crews arrived and began an attack to protect the neighboring building from the spreading fire. Witnesses in the neighborhood described hearing a loud boom and then seeing the flames when they went outside to investigate what had happened. North-West Fire responded with a total of 15 firefighters and 5 engines. Due to the number of buildings and propane tanks within a close proximity, and the size of the fire, mutual aid was requested from Jefferson-Como, Hartsel, and Red, White & Blue Fire Districts. A total of 31 firefighters were on scene with 8 engines. North-West Fire’s newest engine was put in service just 6 days prior and performed well as the initial attack engine. Also assisting at the scene was South Park Ambulance, Fairplay Police, Park County Sheriff, Fairplay Public Works, and CDOT. The house was completely destroyed by the explosion, but fortunately no one was hurt in the incident. Fire crews remained on scene until 3:30 a.m. to verify the fire was contained. Crews returned to the scene the following day to monitor smoldering debris. Once it has cooled enough a thorough investigation will be completed. Click on Thumbnail image to view larger picture.
