Fairgrounds Barn Survives Fire Damage
Fairplay, CO – At approximately 7:00 a.m. on September 5 North-West Fire
was dispatched to the report of a structure fire at the Fairplay
Fairgrounds. On arrival crews found the barn, located northeast of the
fairgrounds, with flames fully engulfing the top level. Three engines and
8 firefighters responded and quickly began to attack the fire from the
outside. Mutual aid had been requested from Jefferson-Como Fire and
Hartsel Fire, but was stood down once the fire was controlled. The fire
was confined to the upper story, leaving the lower level mostly intact.
Once the fire was extinguished firefighters checked the structure for
damage and fire extension from the interior. Much of the top floor was
burned away and most of the roof joists on the lower level were charred
to some extent.
Damage to the structure is estimated at 30%, primarily to the upper level.
Investigation showed the origin of the fire to be on the upper level, near
the stairs, at the north end of the barn. The cause is undetermined at this
time.
There were no animals in the barn at the time of the fire and no injuries
were sustained during the incident.
